My Personal Project has been incredibly insightful for me. This project exposed me to various areas in the vast spectrum of social justice. At the start of the project, I still shared the same passion for advocating for the solutions of social inequalities, as I do now, however, a common critique that I received was that my solutions were too unrealistic. Going forward with this project, I learnt about how the existing solutions to problems relating to domestic worker abuse were also incredibly effective in theory, but not actuality and looking at the failures of these solutions helped me realize that for me to be able to improve my ability to apply solutions to real life situations. I brainstormed and included feasible and realistic approaches in my blog which actually have a chance of pushing for systemic change. These included staying on top of and posting petition links and credible donation sites. Trying to organize meetings with small organization leaders who have similar interests and trying to stay in contact with them to initiate possible projects etc.
I started off the personal project with a decent idea on the Global Context ‘Fairness and Development’. My understanding on the concept was that it was limited to simply exploring equal treatment and rights and responsibilities. By the end of the project, I explored and found links that these equal treatments of rights and responsibilities have on development of communities. It has showed me how progression towards just and fair treatment allows us a society to move forward. Placing this in context with domestic workers, as I explored possible areas of systemic problems and issues, I was able to brainstorm solutions to bring about fairness and how that would allow us to develop as a community.
I developed as a communicator throughout the process. I learnt how to express the urgency of the issue I was trying to shed light on through the use of various communicative techniques such as including anecdotes and images to connect with the audience more all of which would help persuade them to speak out and use their voice. Creating a blog was an excellent way for me to develop these skills as I explored different conventions I could employ to convey my message. In the process, I listened and researched different people’s stories all to gain an understanding on the problem so I could communicate and spread information about it accordingly.
I became more caring by educating myself and others about the different societal as well economic issues that a lot of different groups in society deal with. I dedicated my project on doing my part to help with the issue. Being able to talk to these individuals and their stories helped me empathize with them and lead me to dedicate myself even more to the project. I understood the importance of caring about these issues and using those emotions to help brainstorm solutions.
However, reflecting on the process has also provided me with areas of improvement which I could work on. I would work more on self-management to publish my blogs earlier which would allow me to receive and analyze more feedback. I was a risk taker by talking about a somewhat controversial issue such as the ethics of capitalism and its policies etc. However, I would like to improve on this skill by being able to take my ideas forward to larger possible audiences and debate them.
Overall, I felt extremely satisfied and grateful for this journey because of the insight it provided me with and the skills and profiles it allowed me to develop and improve on.
